Cheapass Games is a fun company that produces board and card games based on the idea that you already have most of the pieces (tokens, dice, etc.) necessary to play a board game on hand, so all they need to supply is rules and a board. James Ernest is the President and lead game designer. Their games typically involve an amusing premise, as you can tell from the titles of some of their games:
- Give Me The Brain
- Kill Doctor Lucky — a sort of reverse Clue — out of print, but you can still Save Doctor Lucky
- Before I Kill You, Mr. Bond — lure a superspy to your lair and try to keep him there — now known as James Ernest’s Totally Renamed Spy Game (apparently they got a letter)
- Unexploded Cow
- Enemy Chocolatier — their latest effort.
They have many others. My personal favorite is The Very Clever Pipe Game. It’s an abstract strategy (my favorite type!) game where you try to lay out cards with pipes drawn on them to complete more of your pipes than your opponent.
Their games generally come in a envelope and cost just a few bucks. For goofing around fun Cheapass is hard to beat.
