A handicap can be provided by giving one player preexisting posts on the board before play begins. On a 13×13 board up to four posts can be placed, one in each of the 3×3 points. On a 19×19 board up to nine posts can be placed, at the 4×4 points in the corners, the 10×4 points in the middle of the sides, and in the center 10×10 point. On a 25×25 board, up to sixteen posts can be placed, at the 4×4 points in the corners, the two 10×4 points on the sides (10×4 and 16×4 if you prefer to refer to it that way), and the four 10×10 points in the center.
When handicapping on larger boards, start with the corner posts, then move to the side posts, then to the interior posts if necessary.
